About The Mosquito BeatersLooking north on Brevard Avenue in downtown Cocoa

MOSQUITO BEATERS NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!!
You can donate your valuable time or resources to help preserve the organization.
Please contact us if you would like to preserve our area's history and assist with the annual reunion in March. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to share stories and smiles. Come down to the office in Cocoa Village and make some new friends. We'd love to meet you!

Mosquito Beaters is devoted to preserving the history of Central Brevard County, Florida which includes Cocoa, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and the surrounding area in photos, stories and much more.

One cold morning in 1985, Head Mosquito Beater, George L. "Speedy" Harrell, called his daughter asked, "What are you doing?" When told she was going to work he said, "Call in sick—I've thought of a project! Your mama is cussin' and I know you'll help put it together." Needless to say, a true southern girl does what her Daddy says. She did not go to work and the first planning meeting was held at the old "Tiger Den", under the water tower, to gather friends together somewhere besides funerals—and the rest, they say...is history.

Originally Mosquito Beaters was designed to bring people together who had lived in Central Brevard county prior to 1950 and the "Missle days." But the organization has grown each and every year with the help and support of all the loyal Mosquito Beaters that we really need to redefine our mission. We are so much more than the true pioneers who were here prior to 1950!!!

It doesn't matter when you arrived in central Brevard County. If you love the area and are interested in preserving its rich history then you ARE a Mosquito Beater. Please consider sharing your memories, photos or extra time to help make this a great organization. We want and need younger generations to participate. We also benefit greatly from donations as we are a "not-for-profit" organization.

Be sure to check out the memories in the History section and don't forget to sign the Guestbook. It has a lot of memories in it as well!

If you are in the central Brevard county area, drop in and visit us at the Alma Clyde Field Library in Cocoa Village. There is a map with our location. You can see photos of the annual gatherings among other things. We're always looking for volunteers to help with various events and activities. Also check out the Resources section for great links to other sites!

Check out the Beach Web Cams! Check out the live streaming web cam of Cocoa Beach that you can control! LINK

Special thanks go to George "Speedy" Harrell and Wanda Harell , for organizing and keeping the whole organization moving forward. Margie Harpell Braxton, Mosquito Beater alumnus, for campaigning for this site and notifying so many people that it exists, Dr. Lori Walters, Historian, for volunteering her valuable time to assist in it's development and Gene Baird for organizing and providing the Memories in the History section!! And to the many Mosquito Beaters alumni for sharing their memories.
